We’re told that life is messy and to clean it up we need paper towels; lots of them. It’s understandable that we have become so accustomed to the convenience of simply tearing off a sheet to wipe a spill. The cost of a roll of paper towels would seem to be equivalent to the cost of washing and drying a load of washcloths. If you look at the bigger picture, however, you’ll find that even one single household can use a substantial amount of this paper product in a year.
The Paperless Project tells us that if every American household used three less rolls of paper towels in a year it would save 120,000 tons of waste in our eco-system. That is a lot of waste. It is true that change begins with us. We, as individuals, must go first. Once you commit to something like using less paper towels you become a good example for others to follow. If they see how little inconvenience it has created in your life they begin to believe they can do this thing to. The idea spreads and the earth gets a break. You don’t have to lead parades for reducing waste you only have to champion your own habits and share your successes with others.
